Buoyancy and Stability Analysis of Floating Structures
 
Introduction

Strand7 provides tools to model offshore floating structures such as boats subject to buoyant forces, payload and other loadings.
Buoyancy effects on a partially or fully submerged object can be considered in a nonlinear transient analysis by implementing a Factor vs Position table.
This table factors the applied pressure according to the relationship between hydrostatic pressure and the submerged depth, hence simulating the effects of buoyancy.
Another method to model buoyancy is by direct application of Archimedes’ principle, which is to apply the buoyancy forces in the negative gravity direction based on the submerged volume of an object.
Note that still water is modelled in this example, but the fluid dynamics of flow around the object are not considered.
Problem

A standard residential pontoon decking is supported by four 1200 L flotation modules.
The flotation modules are bolted to an overlying aluminium frame which supports a timber decking. The polyethylene flotation modules are filled with polyurethane foam for buoyancy and can also be filled with ballast sand for additional stability.
A total payload of 450 kg is added to various locations on the pontoon to assess its stability.
The objectives of this exercise are:
  • To determine the submerged level of the deck at steady state.
  • To determine the displacement of the deck with a full payload.
  • To observe the effect of ballast weight on stability.
